Fees on a Hipobuy quote: Operating Cost, fuel and the display rate
The per-parcel figures in Show More, the weight prices, the yuan-to-dollar rate the page uses, and the money that never appears on a shipping quote at all.
Hipobuy’s own cost formula
Hipobuy’s Service & Fees article starts from a promise of free shopping agent service and a short formula: the total cost of an agent order is item cost plus international shipping fee plus customs charges, with value-added services bought as needed.
Item cost is the product price plus domestic shipping from the seller to the warehouse. The international shipping fee is calculated from weight, shipping method and destination. Customs charges are described as a customs declaration cost of “generally RMB 10.00” per parcel, depending on the shipping method.
The estimator covers only the middle term, and, if the Operating Cost is the same thing as the customs charge, part of the last. Item cost never appears on a quote.
Hipobuy’s estimator data agrees with the free service promise in one detail: the field serviceFee was 0 on every line.
The article does not list fuel surcharges, paid protection or payment fees. Those turn up elsewhere: fuel in Show More, protection on the parcel page, payment fees on the payment help pages.

Operating Cost: 6.67, 10.01 and 1.74
Show More on every one of the 90 lines read “Operating Cost 1.74USD”. Behind it, the first set holds operateFee 6.67 CNY and the second set operateFeeRaise 10.01 CNY; 10.01 × 0.1733 rounds to 1.74.
The fees page says “generally RMB 10.00 (Depending on the shipping method)”. The second-set figure is a cent away from that, and it did not vary by shipping method on any line we read. Hipobuy never labels the Operating Cost as the customs declaration cost, so we keep the two side by side rather than equate them.
The discount on the bold figure leaves Operating Cost untouched, so the full 1.74 dollars sits inside the bold price on every line.

operateFee 6.67, operateFeeRaise 10.01, operateFeeRate 1.74Fuel Surcharge, from nothing to 113 yuan
Fuel Surcharge is the second per-parcel figure in Show More. It varies a lot: 25 of the 90 lines had none, mostly express courier lines, while IT AIR DPD-KD1 carried 113 CNY in the first set, shown as $29.38.
No Hipobuy help article we read explains how fuel is set or when it changes. In the shipping trade a fuel surcharge is a carrier charge that follows fuel prices; Hipobuy uses the label without a definition.
Two practical points follow from the data. Fuel is per parcel, so splitting goods into two parcels pays it twice. And because the bold figure leaves fuel whole, a fuel-heavy line gains least from the tag.

First weight and additional weight
The weight charge is the part that grows with your parcel. Show More gives it as a first weight price and an additional weight price, in dollars per step. The estimator’s FAQ defines the first unit as “the minimum weight that parcel will be charged for”.
Steps differ by line. In the Show More records, 49 lines used a 100 g first unit, 20 used 500 g, 13 used 1,000 g, 4 used 50 g and three used 701 g, 2,000 g or 10,100 g. US AIR USPS-ZF1 charged $2.34 per 100 g from the first gram; HIPO-RoyalMail-GB-1, $1.64.
How a heavier or lighter packed parcel is settled after the estimate is a separate topic. Hipobuy’s billing-weight article covers it: you prepay on the estimated weight and the difference is settled after packing.

The display rate on the page
Every dollar figure on the estimator is a yuan figure multiplied by one rate. On 16 October 2026 that rate was 0.1733 dollars per yuan, or about 5.770 yuan per dollar. Our own check of the market rate the same day gave 6.703 yuan per dollar.
So each yuan on a quote showed as about 16.2% more dollars than a mid-market conversion would give. The rate for topping up the other way, dollars into a yuan balance, was 6.6478 yuan per dollar, about 0.8% below mid-market.
Hipobuy’s PayPal article says its rates follow the latest Bank of China rate and are adjusted from time to time. If you want to compare lines, compare them in one currency on the same day; the rate cancels out. Type mode prints this comparison for a rate you enter.

Money that never appears on a quote
Several costs never appear on a shipping quote. Keep them in view when you compare a quote with what leaves your card:
- Item price and domestic shipping, paid when you order.
- Value-added services: extra photos at CNY 1.00 each, a rehearsal parcel at 20 CNY, custom packing options.
- Paid protection, with its rate shown on the parcel page.
- Payment fees: Hipobuy’s PayPal article gives 5% + $0.37 for top-ups; another payment page gives 4.4% + $0.30.
- Duties, taxes or handling charged in your country, depending on the line’s tax label and local rules.

Each of these has its own page on Hipobuy. They are simply outside the estimator, so a quote alone never shows the full spend.
